Alternatives to the Altis & Civic: Part 1/5

I was talking to a friend the other day who wanted to upgrade from his 4 year old Vios. When i asked him what he had in mind he replied "civic and altis". I then asked him why he did not consider the Forte, Focus Ghia and Sylphy and his replies were " korean, expensive maintenance, low resale value, ford also same, slyphy UGLY!" After a couple of weeks testing all 5 cars, he finally made his mind up on getting a used Focus.

Now if you are in a similar situation as to what car to buy, here is a super simple comparison below!

VERDICT
Corolla Altis Facelift

The new facelift although minor has improved the overall appearance. Not overtly sporty, but easy on the eyes and  HID headlights for the 2.0V. Rear light clusters are an improvement over pre-facelift model but still rather messy.Light colored cabin gives a spacious and airy feel while soft touch plastics and formidable fit and finish giveit a quality feel. Faux wood panelling does nothing but cheapen the interior. Well thought out placement of buttons and equipment makes the car a cinch to get used to. One of the features that ladies might find useful are front parking sensors which can be activated with a touch of a button. Useful cubby holes and not 1 but 2 gloveboxes are an added bonus. Handling wise, the car is average, but that is because the guys at Toyota have biased the suspension to be as cushy as possible for the family man. It's also one of the most silent in it's class, thanks in part due to the new 7speed Super CVT found in the 1.8 and 2.0 variants.

Prices range from RM105,990 for the base 1.6 and work their way up to RM131, 990 for the top of the range 2.0.

Pros:
Well equipped car
Quality cabin fit and finish
Quiet and comfy ride
Good resale value
Latest engine and drive train/gearbox

Cons:
Bland looks
No drivetrain update for 1.6
Suitable for:
-Family man without sporting intentions
-Individuals who are looking for good resale value
-Epic Failures at parking (front and rear parking sensors)
-Like the Camry but do not need such a big car

Lookout for the next few posts as i'll be reviewing the Civic, Forte, Sylphy and Focus and delivering the final verdict on best overall performer.
